$50,000 for Charity

Shauna Madsen's first painting in her satirical series, "Elbows Up" was featured in the live auction during the Kevin Karius Celebrity Golf Tournament, and helped raise $50,000 with all proceeds going to Easter Seals.

“Elbows Up”  is a symbolic, tongue-in-cheek tribute to Canada’s quiet power and enduring pride. Inspired by a real-life moment when a Canada Goose went beak-to-beak with a Bald Eagle and won, this painting reflects resilience through a uniquely Canadian lens.

Set at Waterton National Park, along the Canada and U.S. border, the work illustrates a crack in the landscape dividing the U.S. and Canadian sides—highlighting tension, strength, and unity. With humour, heart, and respect for our American neighbours, this piece is both a political wink and a cultural nod.

The Big Beautiful Bill - Canadian Style!

A satirical celebration of absurdity and identity

The “Canadian” Big Beautiful Bill is the second painting in my satirical series exploring the intersection of politics, power, and national personality, with a distinctly Canadian twist.

This piece responds to a recent statement by the current U.S. president, who dubbed a newly passed piece of legislation “One Big Beautiful Bill”, arguably one of the most baffling names to ever grace a national policy.

As a Canadian artist, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to reinterpret such an over-the-top phrase through a Northern lens, and of course, feature our Canadian Goose, Gus.

In true Canuck fashion, this painting blends irony with imagery, humour with heart, and speaks to our ability to laugh even when the headlines make us cringe.

While it’s playful on the surface, the piece also offers a pointed reflection: How do we define leadership, and what happens when political theatre meets real-world impact?

Through art, I invite viewers to engage with those questions, politely, of course.

Celebrating Milestones

The Peavine Metis Settlement in northern Alberta approached me to assist in creating a unique and culturally significant gift that would honour their culture and connection to the land. After collaborating on a few ideas, we crafted this relief sculpture using clay, acrylic paint, the iconic Metis sash, and reclaimed wood from buildings across Alberta. This piece was presented to Ken Wilson, Minister of Indigenous Relations, during a celebration commemorating the 84th Anniversary of the Peavine Metis Settlement.

Visual Storytelling

The Metis General Council commissioned me to create a collection of eight shadow boxes as gifts for each of the eight Metis settlements in Alberta. Each shadow box features a unique storyboard that celebrates the culture, land, and wildlife that are significant to their respective communities. Through the art of visual storytelling, I sculpted miniatures of wildlife, plants, lakes, landscapes, and community activities, capturing the essence of each settlement. Additionally, I incorporated the Metis flag and sash and the individual logos of each settlement, adding a touch of personalization and identity.

Giving Back

As an artist collaborating with Benoit Wellness Consulting and The Front-Line Resiliency Project, I actively contributed to raising vital funds in support of Mental Health.

I showcased my work and painted live at various events, contributing the paintings to the silent auction. I painted “God Spelled Backward” during their golf tournament and contributed “Ebony” to their Silent Auction. The organizers commissioned me to paint "A Bond for Life" for a special awards ceremony. We carefully framed prints of the artwork, which were then presented to deserving individuals during a celebratory gala. This special occasion aimed to recognize and honour the invaluable work carried out by first responders in our community.
